Terroir is a concept that identifies a specific area of land, with unique qualities and attributes and distinctly stands apart from others. Some of the earliest records of terroir record-keeping were made by Cistercian Monks 400-500 AD who lived in Burgundy and were tasked with producing the finest wine for the celebration of God. More than 500 years later, their detailed work is still relevant today.
New Zealand does not yet have centuries of winemaking culture, however, the country has benefited from a blend of old and new-world winemaking knowledge. In addition to producing exceptional Sauvignon Blanc, identified sub-regions in Marlborough also produce some of New Zealand's finest Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays.
Founder and Winemaker John Belsham identified the land (now the Awatere Estate) in 1998, to specifically grow Pinot Noir. The aspect combined with the ancient soils, and micro-climate were ideal.
The vines are hand-tended and the grapes are hand-picked. The juice undergoes natural indigenous fermentations {wild} and the resulting wines are unfined. The wines speak of place and can only come from the Belsham Awatere Estate in Marlborough, New Zealand.
Enjoy an incredible collection of award-winning wines that celebrate the land.
