“There are many excellent alternative-style Sauvignon Blancs; La Lapine is the best of them all.” — Sam Kim
La Lapine is the flagship Icon Sauvignon Blanc of Foxes Island, crafted only in exceptional vintages and considered one of the most distinctive, age-worthy expressions of Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand. Sourced from the Awatere Valley of Marlborough, the wine is fermented with indigenous yeast in a large French oak foudre, an oval vessel that enhances texture, richness, and depth without imparting overt oak flavour.
For those who seek elegance, layered complexity, and a more grown-up expression of Sauvignon Blanc, La Lapine stands apart. In Europe, Sauvignon Blanc is celebrated for its structure and longevity, and as one of the world’s most ancient grape varieties — the mother of Cabernet Sauvignon — it has immense capacity for refinement when handled with patience and classical technique.
The 2014 vintage reveals a captivating bouquet of ripe citrus, stone fruit, and tropical notes intertwined with lees-derived richness, herbaceous lift, and mineral detail. The palate begins with a satin-like texture before vibrant acidity unfurls flavours of lemon peel, white peach, apple, pineapple, and subtle savoury herbs. Layers from the foudre fermentation contribute depth, flint, spice, and a long, focused finish.
Cellar-aged before release, the wine shows remarkable harmony and will continue to evolve. Only 3,033 bottles were produced.
