From the Great 2016 Vintage, the indigenous ferment Estate Pinot Noir captures the essence of the Awatere Estate. A blend of three Dijon clones of Pinot Noir planted across the seven distinct terraces that sit directly above the glacial blue waters of the Awatere River.
Utilising the indigenous yeast that naturally live in the vineyard, the juice was fermented in large, open-top cuves and then barrel-aged for 10 months in small French oak barriques. Employing gentle handling and gravity flow movements, the Pinot Noir settled on its own, and no fining was required. The wine is naturally vegan-friendly.
As with all Foxes Island Wines, once bottled, the Pinot Noir was allowed to cellar-age before release to further develop layers of complexity and interest. The wine can be enjoyed now and with proper cellaring, for many more years yet to come.
Wine Commentary
94 Points - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
Graceful and complex, the inviting bouquet shows dark berry, dried herbs, cured meat, earthy mushrooms, and toasted nut nuances. The palate is rich and refined with excellent weight and silky flow, wonderfully supported by finely infused tannins, finishing persistent and seductive.
