The First Wine Ever Produced at Foxes Island

The 2016 Estate Chardonnay represents the 24th vintage of the very first wine ever crafted at Foxes Island. Since its inaugural release in 1992, this Chardonnay has been consistently regarded as one of New Zealand’s most distinctive and enduring single vineyard expressions — and among the first single vineyard Chardonnays ever produced in the country.

The grapes are grown on the uppermost terrace of the Awatere Valley estate, where deeper, undisturbed soils provide the perfect environment for Chardonnay to thrive. This elevated site delivers fruit with natural concentration, purity, and tension — hallmarks of the Foxes Island style since day one.

Hand-picked and gently pressed, the wine was fermented with indigenous yeast in large French oak vessels, enhancing texture, refinement, and depth while avoiding overt oak influence. After bottling, the Chardonnay was cellar-aged before release, allowing layers of complexity and harmony to fully integrate.

The 2016 vintage offers vibrant floral aromatics leading into flavours of apricot, lemon curd, chalk, white pepper, and warm brioche. The palate is energetic, beautifully textural, and carried by precise structure and natural balance.
